The Experience

You're clipped in, feet off the ground, and then the guide lets go. The first two ziplines run side-by-side—600 feet each—so you can see your partner's face the whole way down. It's the warm-up, the moment you realize your harness works and the view of Kipu Ranch spreads out below you in green and brown patches. The ranch sprawls across 4,000 acres at the base of the Ha'upu Mountain Range, and you're about to cross it by air.

The Kauai zipline tour builds from there. After the side-by-side lines, you move through four more ziplines, each one longer than the last, each one pulling you deeper into the ranch and higher above it. Then comes the 4,000-foot Superman-style FlyLine—the longest zipline in the state of Hawaii. You're horizontal, face-down, flying like you're actually airborne. Nearly two miles of total distance across the day, and the last line is the one that stays with you. The whole thing takes you through sections of Kipu Ranch that have been used as filming locations, so the landscape has that strange familiarity even if you've never been here before.

Between ziplines, you ride in open-air trucks through the working ranch itself. The cattle are real, the mud is real, and the guides point out the views as you bump along. You get bottled water and Hanalima Bakery cookies partway through—small things, but they matter when you're in the sun and the adrenaline is wearing off.
