Private Hanalei Bay Surf Lesson on Kauai: Learn to Ride
Hanalei Bay has a sandy bottom, which is why beginners actually stand up on their first try.
A private surf lesson at Hanalei Bay on Kauai's North Shore, where you learn ocean safety, paddling and wave-catching from a local instructor in beginner-friendly conditions. The lesson runs 90 minutes and includes a surfboard, leash, rash vest and personalized coaching. Children from age 5 are welcome, and the sandy bottom makes it easier to find your balance than reef or rocky breaks elsewhere.
The Experience
You arrive 30 minutes before your lesson start time at the beach in Hanalei. Your instructor meets you there and walks you through ocean safety and how to read the water before you paddle out. The lesson itself is 90 minutes of hands-on practice: you'll learn basic paddling technique on the board, then work on the pop-up—the move that gets you standing. Hanalei's gentle, consistent waves are built for this. Most beginners catch and ride at least one wave by the end.
The surfboard, leash and rash vest are all provided, so you show up with nothing but yourself. Your instructor stays in the water with you the whole time, offering real-time feedback on your paddle stroke and your timing. The sandy bottom means you can stand up and reset between attempts without worrying about sharp rocks or reef underneath. By the end of 90 minutes, you'll have the fundamentals to paddle and pop up, and you'll know what to work on next time you're in the water.
This is the North Shore's first surf school, and the team has built the lesson around what actually works for beginners. The focus is on getting you comfortable in the ocean and on the board—not on showing off or rushing through technique. Families book these lessons regularly; kids from age 5 onward learn the same way adults do.

Is this one for you?The lesson starts early and you'll be in the water paddling and popping up for the full 90 minutes, so come ready to work. If you want a gentler introduction or a shorter time in the ocean, this pace might not suit you—but if you're willing to spend the morning learning actively, the sandy bottom and small waves mean you'll actually stand up and ride.

What happens if I've never surfed before?
The lesson is built for beginners. You'll learn paddling and ocean safety from the start, and the instructor will coach you through catching and riding your first waves. The sandy bottom and gentle waves at Hanalei Bay make it easier to get up on the board than most other breaks.
Do I need to bring my own wetsuit or board?
No. The lesson includes a top-of-the-line surfboard, leash and rash vest. You don't need to bring any equipment—just yourself and a willingness to get wet.
What time does the lesson start, and how long is it?
You choose your start time when you book. The lesson itself runs 90 minutes, and you'll need to arrive 30 minutes early for check-in. So if you book an 8:30 am lesson, you'll check in at 8:00 am.
Is Hanalei Bay safe for beginners?
Yes. The bay has a sandy bottom, gentle waves and consistent conditions that make it ideal for learning. Your instructor will brief you on ocean safety and how to read the water before you paddle out, and they stay with you throughout the lesson.
What should I know before I book?
You'll need to call and confirm your booking 48 hours before your lesson. Bring your height and weight when you book so the instructor can set up the right board for you. Towels, swimwear and sunscreen are not included, so bring your own or plan to buy them nearby.
