Step-by-step itinerary
Haunted pub crawl through downtown
- Begin near The Needle
- Explore Quality Hill neighborhood
- Stop outside Coates House Hotel
- See exterior of Folly Theater
- Visit historic Muehlebach Hotel
The experience
The tour starts near The Needle and moves into Quality Hill, one of Kansas City's oldest downtown neighborhoods. Once home to the city's wealthy elite, Quality Hill was built on money and ambition, but beneath that respectability were darker stories of gambling, scandal, and violence. You'll hear about lingering figures and old-house hauntings tied to the neighborhood's troubled past, including tales connected to Sands Hopkins.
Four stops anchor the evening. The Coates House Hotel, a grand landmark from Kansas City's rise as a major Midwest city, became the site of one of the deadliest fires in 1978, when twenty people lost their lives. You'll look toward the upper windows where strange figures are said to appear and learn about the Ghost Bride legend. The Folly Theater, open since 1900, hosted vaudeville and burlesque and carries reports of phantom applause, backstage footsteps, and a woman rushing toward the stage as if she never made her final cue: all tied to longtime manager Joe Donegan, a mysterious figure said to still watch over the venue. The Muehlebach Hotel, one of Kansas City's grandest old hotels, connects to presidents, politicians, and entertainers, and holds stories of the mysterious Blue Lady, vanishing children, and unexplained figures in its halls.
This is not polite Kansas City history. The tour digs into the city behind closed doors: saloons, gambling halls, backroom deals, jazz-age nightlife, and stories that refused to stay buried. You must be 21 or older with a valid ID to join. Bring cash or card for drinks at the bars you visit, as beverages are not included in the tour price.
