Two hours watching sea otters, puffins and whales move through Kachemak Bay

A 2-hour wildlife boat tour of Kachemak Bay with a live English-speaking guide, private transportation, and access to the bay's jagged coastline and nesting seabirds. The captain tracks moving creatures in real time to position the boat for the best sightings: sea otters, puffins, eagles, whales, seals and cormorants are all possible. Children from age 1 are welcome.

Step-by-step itinerary

Wildlife tour of Kachemak Bay

  • Board boat in Homer, Alaska
  • Explore Kachemak Bay coastline
  • Spot sea otters, eagles, puffins
  • Observe whales, seals, bears
  • View nesting seabirds and rock formations
  • Enjoy sea kelp and intertidal creatures

The experience

What wildlife might you actually see on a given day? The captain keeps track of where the creatures are moving and adjusts the route to give you the best chance of spotting them. Sea otters, puffins, cormorants, murres, eagles, whales and seals all live in or pass through Kachemak Bay, and nesting seabirds crowd the rock formations along the shore. Every cruise is different because the animals are where they are that day, not where a fixed itinerary says they should be.

The boat explores the bay's jagged coastline, where the Kenai Mountains rise behind the water and geologic rock formations jut from the sea. You'll see the intertidal zone and sea kelp beds from the water: the places where the creatures actually live and feed. The whole thing takes two hours, and you're watching from the comfort of the boat the entire time.

Private transportation is included, so you don't arrange a separate ride to the departure point. The guide is live and speaks English, and the tour welcomes children from age 1 onward. Service animals are allowed on board.
