The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the low hum — like a distant storm trapped behind glass. We’d just walked into iFLY Houston Memorial, and even before we got our gear, you could feel this weird mix of nerves and excitement in the air. Our instructor, Marcus, handed me a jumpsuit and grinned when I fumbled with the zipper (not my finest moment). He ran us through a quick training, showing how to hold your arms so you don’t spin out. I kept thinking: there’s no way this is as easy as he makes it look.

Inside the wind tunnel, it’s louder than you expect — not scary, just all-encompassing. The air smells faintly metallic and cool on your face. When Marcus gave me the nod, I leaned forward and suddenly I was floating. Not falling, not really flying either… more like being held up by invisible hands. My cheeks puffed out from the wind and I caught myself laughing mid-air (which feels ridiculous at 130 mph). Marcus kept signaling little corrections — chin up, legs straighter — and somehow it worked. The whole minute felt both endless and over too fast.

Between flights, we watched a kid do barrel rolls while his dad filmed from behind the glass. There was this sense that everyone was rooting for each other — strangers clapping when someone nailed it or just managed to stay upright. On my second go, I relaxed enough to notice how weightless everything felt; even my nerves seemed lighter. Afterward they handed me a certificate with my name on it (I’m not usually sentimental about these things but… yeah, I kept it). Walking out into humid Houston air again felt strange after all that wind.
