The experience

Your guide meets you at your Reno hotel and shuttles you to the trailhead with snacks and beverages in hand. Once there, you're paired with a horse suited to your experience level, and the group sets out on horseback across the landscape the Emigrant Trail pioneers crossed. The ride covers historic trails, meadows, grasslands and dense pine forest, with the Sierra Nevada peaks, some still snow-capped, framing the high desert plateaus and icy streams below.

The guide sets the pace so the group stays together, and you ride for about three hours. The route passes the Donner Party Camp and other sites tied to the region's westward expansion history. Unlike watching scenery from a vehicle, you're moving through it the way early settlers did, which changes how the landscape reads: the scale of the terrain, the sound of hooves on different ground, the way the mountains shift as you move.
