The Experience

Li handed me the helmet with a grin and said, “Don’t worry, the uphill is fun now.” I didn’t quite believe her until we started pedaling out of Honolulu — that first push on the Kona eBike felt like cheating, in the best way. We passed a group of kids playing under a mango tree and one of them waved at us like we were astronauts or something. The city noise faded so fast it was almost weird. I could hear these tiny birds — our guide called them ‘amakihi’ — darting around, and there was this earthy smell after last night’s rain that stuck to my shirt.

The road up Mount Tantalus twists through thick rainforest, sometimes opening just enough for you to catch glimpses of Honolulu far below. Our guide pointed out some wild ginger growing by the roadside (I tried to pronounce its Hawaiian name — Li laughed, so I probably butchered it). The air was cooler than I expected for Hawaii, almost chilly when we stopped to take in the view at about 2,000 feet up. My legs were working but honestly, with the electric assist, it felt more like flying than climbing. There was a part where we all just coasted in silence for a minute — only wind and leaves moving overhead. That sticks with me.

I’ll admit I was nervous about keeping up (haven’t biked much since college), but you do need to pedal — it’s not a free ride. Still, every time I thought I’d need a break, the motor kicked in and made me feel stronger than I am. On the way down, someone yelled “Ten miles of smiles!” and yeah… that’s cheesy but it fit. There’s something about seeing Oahu from up there that makes you forget about your phone for once.
