The experience

The tour starts on the streets where Billie Holiday, Malcolm X, and Michael Jackson walked, moving through Harlem's most significant sites. You'll see the Apollo Theater from the outside (reopened in 1934 to both Black and white audiences after decades of segregation), and pass the Abyssinian Baptist Church, founded in 1808 and one of the oldest African-American Baptist churches in the country. The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a research library and archive of the New York Public Library, appears as an exterior stop. So does Strivers' Row, a row of historic brownstones built by David H. King Jr., the architect behind the Washington Arch and the Empire State Building.

After the neighborhood walk, you move into the centerpiece: a live gospel service at a local church. This is not a performance staged for tourists. You sit with the congregation, experience the service itself, and participate in the gospel music alongside live musicians and a choir.
