The experience
The charter runs three or five hours depending on which trip you book. You bring nothing but yourself: the boat supplies all fishing gear, light rain gear, and snacks. A fishing license costs $25 cash, paid on the boat when you arrive. Groups of up to six can book the five-hour trip as a single party, or you can join a three-hour departure on your own or with friends.
Halibut is the target, but the waters around Hoonah hold other life. Humpback whales, sea otters, sea lions, eagles and other species move through the same area, and sightings happen often enough that they are part of what makes the day. All fish caught are released. The processing plant that once kept the catch has closed, so the fishery now runs catch-and-release only. That does not change the fishing itself. It changes what you take home.
Pickup is included, and children from age one can come along. The boat accommodates all fitness levels, so the physical demand is low. The main constraint is weather and water conditions, which Alaska can shift quickly.
