The experience
You start at the Fins and Feathers meeting location west of downtown Bozeman, then ride with your guide to one of four legendary rivers (the Yellowstone, Madison, Gallatin or Jefferson) each within 30 to 60 minutes of town. The river choice depends on that day's weather and water conditions, which means your guide is solving for the best fishing, not a fixed itinerary. You'll cover 8 to 10 miles of river over 5 to 7 hours on the water, wading and floating sections the guide selects based on what's working.
First-time anglers get hands-on instruction while actively fishing, learning the fundamentals as you go. Experienced anglers work with the guide on technique and local strategy tailored to maximize your success on that particular stretch. Fins and Feathers has been outfitting these rivers since 2000, so the guides carry decades of local knowledge about seasonal patterns, hatch timing and which water suits which skill level on any given day.
The trip includes all fly fishing gear (rods, reels and flies) plus waders and wading boots when needed. You'll have a full-size cooler with non-alcoholic drinks and water on ice throughout the day, and a simple deli-style lunch of a sandwich, wrap or salad with a small side snack. Transport to and from the river is included, so you leave from the meeting point and return there at the end of the day.
