The experience

You're picked up from your Fairbanks hotel and driven to the Chena River State Recreation Area, where the day centers on learning to fish the way locals do. The Chena is a class 1-2 river, meaning a relaxing float rather than a technical one, and your guide handles the boat while teaching you the best spots and techniques for the fish that live here. You'll fish for the species that thrive in interior Alaska's waters, and the guide knows where they congregate and what they're taking on any given day. All the equipment you need comes with you (rods, tackle, everything), so you show up and fish.

The river itself runs through the Chena and White Mountains, and the landscape brings wildlife into view. Moose, beaver, bald and golden eagles, and waterfowl are common sights. Grizzly and black bears inhabit the area, though rarely seen. The float is gentle enough that you can focus on the fishing without fighting the current, and the guide's job is to keep you on the fish and teach you what works here. You'll have bottled water and light snacks during the day to keep you going through the 10 hours on the water.

This is a catch-and-release fishery, so the point is the fishing itself: the technique, the reading of the water, the moment the line goes tight. A minimum of four people is required to run the trip, though the operator notes this rarely becomes an issue because of how popular it is. If for some reason the group doesn't fill, you'll be offered either a refund or a reschedule to another date.
