River sounds, darkness, and fireflies flashing in unison for six seconds at a time

A guided night hike in Great Smoky Mountains to witness rare synchronous fireflies that flash in synchronized patterns during their mating season. You meet your guide outside the park, drive to a trailhead, hike in with a provided headlamp and camp chair, and wait for darkness to watch the light show unfold. The guide, a certified Wilderness First Responder with over a decade of experience, explains the fireflies' life cycles and mating rituals while you set up time-lapse photography if you choose.

The experience

You'll meet your guide outside the park and drive together to the trailhead, about twenty minutes away. The route follows the sound of rivers and rapids: the soothing backdrop for the evening ahead. Once you hike in a short distance, you settle into your provided camp chair with your headlamp and wait for full darkness to arrive.

As night deepens, the synchronous fireflies begin their display: they flash together for about six seconds, then go dark for about six seconds, creating a pulsating rhythm that exists in only a handful of places on earth. Your guide walks you through their mating rituals, predator relationships and life cycles while you watch. If you bring a camera, the guide can help you set up time-lapse shots to capture the effect: the synchronized bursts look especially striking in long exposures, though the real-time display is the thing itself.

The group packs up around 10:30pm to head back, though you're welcome to leave earlier if you want. The whole experience runs about three hours from start to finish.
