The experience
The Heritage Center sits at the edge of the Gettysburg National Military Park battlefield and tells the battle's story through the eyes of the people who lived there. You move through the museum at your own pace, encountering artifacts, letters and diary excerpts, interactive displays, and 3-D productions that show what happened before, during and after the three days of fighting. The two-part layout lets you follow both the town's experience and the military campaign side by side, so you understand how the invasion reshaped ordinary lives.
The Cellar Experience is the centerpiece: you walk into a recreation of the basements where townspeople huddled while the battle raged above them, hearing what they heard and confronting the choices they faced. After that, you move into the theater for the Gettysburg Animated Map, an orientation film produced by the Civil War Trust that traces the three days of fighting across the landscape. It gives you the overview you need to make sense of what you saw in the museum and prepares you for the battlefield itself if you visit next.
Skip-the-line entry means you walk past the queue at the door. The museum is fully wheelchair accessible, and strollers are welcome for infants and small children. Last entry is one hour before closing. A gift shop in the lobby stocks books, collectibles, replica weapons, and educational materials if you want to take something home.
