Getty Center art tour for kids ages 6-12: Learn to look
Learn how artists use color, line and composition, then take home proof you did
A private Getty Center art tour for children ages 6-12 teaches visual literacy through hands-on looking at real paintings and sculptures. The guide uses tactile aids and demonstrations to show how artists work, what to notice in a composition, and why a piece matters historically. Adult chaperones learn alongside the kids, and every child leaves with an Art Appreciation Badge.

The experience
The tour runs one hour and focuses on teaching your child how to look at art rather than just what to look at. Instead of moving through galleries passively, the guide points out elements like color, line, perspective and form in works you'll actually stand in front of, then asks questions that get kids thinking like artists themselves. Tactile aids and visual demonstrations let children understand the techniques and motivations behind what they're seeing: knowledge that sticks with them at any museum they visit later.
You'll move through the Getty Center with a live English-speaking guide who keeps the pace right for ages 6-12 while making sure the adults in the group stay engaged too. The guide brings assisted listening devices if anyone needs them, and the Getty's galleries are fully wheelchair accessible. Strollers are welcome for younger siblings who tag along. At the end, each child receives an Art Appreciation Badge: a tangible reminder of what they learned and discovered together.
Groups of up to six travel at the standard rate. If your group is larger, the operator can accommodate up to 35 people with an additional per-person cost. The Getty Center sits near public transportation, and all areas are accessible. If the posted times don't work for your schedule, you can request a different slot when you book.

Top questions
What does my child actually learn on this Getty Center tour?
The guide teaches visual literacy by walking through real artworks and pointing out elements like color, line, composition, perspective and forms of sculpture. Kids learn the historical and narrative context of pieces, and the guide demonstrates the techniques artists use, so the knowledge applies to any museum they visit later, not just the Getty.
Can I bring a younger sibling who's under 6?
Strollers are welcome, so an infant or toddler can come along in a pram. The operator does not recommend the tour itself for children under 6 unless they're in a stroller for the full hour.
How many kids can go on one tour?
Up to six children travel at the standard rate per booking. Groups larger than six can be accommodated up to 35 people total, with an additional per-person cost for anyone over six.
What happens if the posted tour times don't fit our schedule?
You can request a different time when you book. The operator will work with you to find a slot that works for your group.
Is the Getty Center accessible for wheelchairs?
Yes. All areas and surfaces at the Getty Center are wheelchair accessible, and the tour includes a wheelchair if you need one. Assisted listening devices are also available.
