The Experience

The first thing I remember is the smell—coffee and something sweet drifting out of Baked & Wired, where our little group met up. I’d never been to Georgetown before, but the guide (her name was Robin) handed me a napkin and said, “You’ll want a snack for this.” She was right. The canal shimmered in the morning light, and it felt like we were stepping into an old photograph—except there were joggers and someone loudly arguing about parking. That’s DC for you.

We ducked off the main street after a bit, and suddenly it was quiet except for our footsteps on those uneven cobblestones. Robin pointed out the Old Stone House—she called it “the oldest building in Washington,” which made me touch its wall just to see if it felt different (it kind of did, rougher somehow). There was this moment when she described Abigail Adams calling Georgetown a “dirty little hole,” and everyone laughed because now there are these fancy mansions everywhere. It’s weird to imagine that transformation.

I kept noticing little things: iron fences with chipped paint, a gardener waving as we passed by, church bells echoing somewhere behind us. We talked about Jackie Kennedy’s old house, and Robin told us some story about Ben Bradlee that I half-remember—it involved a party and too much champagne. The houses got bigger as we walked west, but honestly, I liked the crooked alleys best. At one point my shoe got stuck between stones; someone helped me out and we both nearly toppled over. So yeah, wear good shoes.

The last stretch took us down these steep steps (from The Exorcist—they really are as dramatic as people say) toward the Potomac River. Sunlight bounced off the water and there were families picnicking nearby. I just stood there for a second listening to the city noise fade into river sounds. I still think about that view sometimes—how Georgetown feels both old and alive at once.
