The experience
You start at the Balinese Room, the oldest continuously operating business on the seawall, where your guide walks you through the Maceo family's Prohibition-era casino and the famous "Ranger's Run." From there the route passes Murdoch's (a building that has been rebuilt after every major storm since 1900), and the site of Electric Park, once called "the Coney Island of the South." The Pleasure Pier comes next, born as a WWII recreation facility and now an amusement destination. You'll stop at the seawall's granite groins for sunset photos, then pass the Sea Turtle Mural at McGuire-Dent Rec Center, where an optional ice cream stop at Fish Tales gives you a moment to rest before the walk back.
The return leg carries the weight of Galveston's deepest story. Fort Crockett's real WWII coastal defenses appear along the way, but the tour's final stop is the Hotel Galvez, built on the exact site where the 1900 hurricane's victims washed ashore, including Sister Katherine and the orphans from the convent. Your guide shares the hotel's one ghost story before the tour ends where it began. The whole walk covers roughly a mile and takes 90 minutes, timed so you finish as daylight fades.

What was the Balinese Room and why does it matter to Galveston's history?
The Balinese Room was the Maceo family's Prohibition-era casino and remains the oldest continuously operating business on the seawall. It survived because of the "Ranger's Run," a route that allowed patrons to escape when Texas Rangers raided the place: a piece of Galveston's wild past that shaped the city's character.
When does this tour run and what time does it start?
The tour runs from October through December and starts roughly 30 minutes before sunset, so the exact start time shifts with the season. The timing is built around watching the Gulf glow as daylight fades.
What happened at the Hotel Galvez and why is it the tour's final stop?
The Hotel Galvez was built on the site where victims of the 1900 hurricane washed ashore, including Sister Katherine and orphans from the convent. It is the tour's final stop because the hotel's story ties together everything you've learned about Galveston's storms and survivors.
What is included in the tour price?
