The experience
The day starts with pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle that carries you to your canyon. These aren't crowded tourist routes: the operator builds each trip around your group's fitness level and comfort, so a beginner's first rappel and an expert's technical descent both happen on the same day, just in different canyons. You get harnesses, rope, helmets and all canyoneering gear. The guide handles the rigging and teaches you the mechanics as you go. Most trips fit multiple canyon systems into a single day because the approaches are short and the rock formations are stacked close together.
What makes these canyons stand out is the solitude. The San Rafael Swell and Cedar Mesa see far fewer visitors than the famous parks, so you're often the only group moving through a slot. The rock itself does the work: narrow walls, natural pools, rappel anchors that have been used for years. A moderate level of physical fitness gets you through. The guide adjusts the route if the group needs it, and children from age 7 can join when paired with adults who are comfortable managing them on rappels and scrambles.
The guide speaks English or Spanish depending on your group's preference. Water is available on request, and if you want meals brought along, the operator can arrange that too. You return to Moab by late afternoon, gear cleaned and packed in the vehicle.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (7 to 17 years). Children under 7 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. No refund if you cancel.
What does a slot canyon rappel actually feel like for someone who's never done it?
You're secured to a rope anchored above, then you walk backward down the canyon wall, controlling your descent with a belay device the guide shows you how to use. The walls are often just arm's reach on both sides, and the stone is smooth from water flow. Most people find the first rappel the scariest and the second one manageable.
Can I do this if I've never been canyoneering before?
Yes. The operator designs routes specifically for beginners, and the guide teaches you everything on-site. A moderate fitness level and willingness to try something new are what matter. Technical experience is not required.
How many canyons do you actually visit in one day?
Often more than one. Because the approaches are short and the canyon systems are close together in the San Rafael Swell and Cedar Mesa, it's common to do multiple objectives in a single day, depending on the group's pace and which canyons the guide chooses for your skill level.
What's the difference between these canyons and the ones near Zion or the Escalante?
The San Rafael Swell, Robber's Roost and Cedar Mesa are less crowded than the famous parks. You're more likely to be alone in the canyon, and the rock formations (narrow slots, natural pools, rappel anchors) are as dramatic as anywhere else in Utah, just without the lines.
What happens if someone in the group is slower or less experienced than the others?
The guide custom-fits the route to the group before you start, so everyone is on a canyon suited to the least experienced person's comfort level. That's the advantage of a private trip: the day is built around your group, not a fixed itinerary.
