Float the canyon's most productive trout waters and watch salmon spawn

A full-day fishing trip down the Kenai River canyon from Jim's Landing to Skilak Lake, drifting through the upper river's most dramatic Alaskan scenery with a guide and hotel pickup included. The canyon section is drift-only and weather-dependent. High winds off the Harding Ice Field can make the Skilak Lake crossing unsafe, and the decision to complete the float is finalized the morning of your trip.

The experience

The Kenai canyon is the most beautiful part of the Kenai River, and the operator holds one of the limited permits to fish and float it. Eight hours on the water takes you from Jim's Landing down through the last three miles of the upper river and into Skilak Lake, a less-traveled section that sits inside the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. The scenery is dramatic (glacial peaks, dense forest, the raw edge of the landscape), and the fishing is what draws people here: rainbow trout and Dolly Varden congregate in these waters, and during spawning season they feed on salmon eggs and fatten up fast.

The trip is drift-only, meaning you float with the current rather than anchor and cast from one spot. Your guide has 20 years of experience reading these waters and knows where the fish hold. The boat take-out sits at the far end of Skilak Lake, and that crossing is the constraint: high winds coming off the Harding Ice Field can make it unsafe. The operator checks conditions the morning of your departure and makes the call then. If the wind is up, you'll fish the upper section instead and skip the lake crossing. Either way, you're on the water for the full eight hours.

Hotel pickup is included, so you don't arrange transport to the landing. Bring layers (the canyon funnels wind and the water is cold), and plan on being wet. The guide handles the boat and the navigation. You fish.

Is this one for you?The eight-hour float and the drift-only format mean you need moderate fitness and comfort on the water. This is not a walk-and-cast trip, and the boat moves constantly. The weather call on the morning of departure is what keeps the crossing safe. If you're flexible about which section you fish, the trip adapts to the conditions.

Top questions

What kind of fish will I have a chance to catch on the Kenai canyon trip?

Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden are the main species here, and they congregate in the canyon waters especially during salmon spawning season when they feed on eggs. The less-traveled section you float through is classified as extremely productive trout water.

What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my trip?

Kenai River canyon trips are weather-dependent, and the final decision to complete the full float is made the morning of your departure. High winds coming off the Harding Ice Field can make crossing Skilak Lake unsafe, so if conditions are rough, you'll fish the upper section instead and skip the lake portion.

Is the eight-hour trip one continuous float, or do you stop to fish different spots?

The canyon section is drift-only, which means you float with the current rather than anchoring at multiple spots. Your guide navigates the boat and positions you in the productive water. You fish as you drift from Jim's Landing down through the upper river and toward Skilak Lake.

Does the trip include a fishing license?

The trip does not include a fishing license. You'll need to arrange that separately before you book.
