The Experience

We were already wobbling a bit before we even left the dock—my friend dropped her flip-flop in the water and our guide just grinned, said it happens all the time. The boards felt lighter than I expected (I’d tried those heavy foam ones before—never again), and honestly, I was relieved. The sun was out but not too hot, just that steady Florida warmth with a salty breeze coming off the canal. You could smell sunscreen and faintly, something sweet from a nearby bakery. I kept glancing at the water, half-hoping for a manatee or something dramatic like that.

Our local guy—Mike? Mark? (I’m terrible with names)—pointed out some wild-looking yachts as we paddled past these crazy big houses. He said one belonged to a retired hockey player; I couldn’t tell if he was joking or not. The best part was how quiet it got away from the road—just the sound of paddles dipping and some birds arguing overhead. At one point, a couple of kids waved at us from their backyard dock. My balance is questionable but I didn’t fall in, so that’s a win. We drifted under this low bridge where the light changed suddenly—everything went kind of blue-green for a minute. It felt like another world down there. Didn’t expect to see so many colorful fish darting around beneath us; someone said they saw a ray but I missed it because I was busy trying to take a photo (they actually sent us free photos afterward). Afterward we sat on the dock for a while, legs dangling over the edge, just watching boats go by and talking about what it would be like to live here. Still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
