Learn to cast and hook trout in five hours on the water

A half-day fly fishing guide trip on Lake Tahoe rivers where you learn casting, fly selection and trout handling from a live guide, with all rods, reels, waders and boots included. The guide customizes the pace to your skill level, whether you're casting for the first time or refining technique. All trips are catch and release. You'll need to bring a California fishing license if you're over 16.

The experience

The guide meets you at a predetermined spot on the river and gets you geared up in waders and boots before heading to the water. If you've never fly fished, the first part of the five hours goes to the basics: how the rod and reel work, what flies to choose for the trout in front of you, and the casting motion itself. The guide moves at your pace, so there's no rush to master it all at once. You'll learn what trout actually eat, how to set the hook when one takes, and how to bring a fish to the net without harming it before releasing it back.

The river itself is the classroom. You're wading on rocky, slippery ground, so the guide expects you to move carefully and stay reasonably fit for the terrain. The trip is flexible: you can call ahead to discuss custom times, group size, or any gear adjustments you need. All the equipment (rods, reels, flies, waders and boots) comes with the booking, so you show up with just your fishing license and willingness to get wet.

What’s included

  • All fly fishing gear including rods, reels, flies, waders and boots.
  • live guide instruction in English.
