The Experience
The first thing that hit me was the noise—airboats are loud, but they hand you ear protection before you even step on, which is honestly a relief. We skimmed out over the water, wind slapping my cheeks and the sawgrass blurring past so fast it looked almost painted. Our guide, Mike, waved at a fisherman off in the reeds and shouted something about “gator territory”—I couldn’t quite hear him over the engine at first, but his grin said enough.
I didn’t expect to smell so much—muddy water mixed with sun-baked plants and this sharp tang that I guess is just what the Everglades smells like in July. There were birds everywhere—herons stalking through shallow pools, and once we startled a flock of white ibises that lifted off all at once. Mike slowed down near a patch of floating lilies and pointed out an alligator half-hidden in the shadows. Its eyes followed us, totally still except for this tiny ripple when it blinked. I kept thinking how close we were to its world for just an hour.
There was a moment when everything went quiet—the boat idling, wind dropping—and you could hear nothing but insects buzzing and some distant frog croak. It felt weirdly peaceful after all that engine roar. Someone asked about endangered species and Mike told us about the panthers (never seen one himself), and how people don’t realize how fragile this place is. He had this way of talking like he’d grown up right here—maybe he did? I should’ve asked.
I still think about that gator’s eyes sometimes—how calm it looked while we all snapped photos and tried not to drop our phones in the water. The whole tour was only an hour but it felt longer somehow, maybe because you’re so far from everything else out there. And yeah, I probably smelled like swamp after, but honestly? Worth it.
