The Experience

The skeleton of SUE dominates the Griffin Halls the moment you step inside the Field Museum in Chicago. Seventy million years old, forty-two feet long, and mounted so you can see every tooth, every claw, every vertebra that made this predator work. Most people stop dead when they see it—there's something about standing under a creature that size that makes the museum feel less like a building and more like stepping into another world. Your basic admission ticket gets you into all the general exhibitions, so after SUE you move through the Grainger Hall of Gems, then into Ancient Egypt where the mummies and hieroglyphics pull you deeper into the museum's collection. The Cyrus Tang Hall of China is there too, along with Native Truths: Our Voices, Our Stories, which shifts the whole rhythm of the day because it's not about objects behind glass—it's about people and their histories told in their own words.

When you arrive, you pick one virtual reality experience to run through: either Drop in the Ocean, which puts you underwater with creatures you've never seen, or VR Transporter, which takes you somewhere else entirely. It's not a gimmick bolted onto the ticket—it's a real addition that changes how you move through the museum. You do the VR, then you're back in the physical galleries, and the contrast between the two kinds of seeing makes both of them sharper. The whole day at the Field Museum moves at your own pace.
