The experience
Thursday After Dark turns the Exploratorium into an adults-only playground from 6pm to 10pm. You skip the line at the door and walk straight into six galleries holding more than 650 hands-on exhibits: machines, contraptions, artworks and experiments built for curiosity and play. The Tactile Dome is the centerpiece: a twisting, turning tunnel you navigate in complete darkness, feeling your way through. Fujiko Nakaya's Fog Bridge #72494 wraps you in a living cloud you can walk through. Gallery 2: Prototyping is where the museum's own exhibit builders test their newest ideas and hand you a prototype to tinker with.
The night is built around a theme that changes each week, and the energy shifts between quiet exploration and social moments. Trivia nights and dance parties pull people together. Surprising experiments, performances, demos and talks happen throughout the evening. The full bar means you can grab a drink and settle in, or keep moving. The Exploratorium sits at Pier 15 on the Embarcadero, a 10-minute walk from the Ferry Building and 15 minutes from Fisherman's Wharf, with the Embarcadero BART station just minutes away.
