The experience

You're in the driver's seat of an electric dirt bike, not watching from a Jeep. The quiet motor lets you hear the landscape and talk with your group as you set your own pace along Shafer Trail, following the Colorado River into the red rock backcountry. The road climbs through giant cliffs and buttes toward the overlook. The halfway point of the ride, where you stop to take in the view of three parks stacked across the horizon: Canyonlands to the north, Dead Horse Point to the east, and Bears Ears to the south. This is the spot made famous by Thelma and Louise, though you get to ride back down instead.

The return follows the same route through the scenery you just climbed, giving you a different angle on the rock formations and the views below Dead Horse Point. The whole tour runs 2.5 hours. You'll wear a protective helmet, chest guard and knee/shin guards. The bikes are Talaria Sting or similar models, designed to be user-friendly even if you've never ridden an electric dirt bike before. A professional guide leads the group and sets the pace.

If you're staying in town without a rental vehicle, this puts you in control of an off-road experience that a Jeep tour wouldn't give you.
