The experience

Egypt Slot Canyon packs a lot into a short approach and exit. You meet your guide at Canyon Country Lodge, then drive down Hole In the Rock Road to the trailhead. From there, you spend roughly two hours hiking and canyoneering through the slot itself: moving through narrows, working through downclimbs that yield to teamwork and partner catches, and rappelling three short pitches. Those with high skill levels can downclimb the entire canyon. Others tackle the rappels and scrambles the guide sets up. The narrows are the draw here, and the challenges stay just hard enough to keep it interesting without overwhelming.

This canyon can hold water after very heavy rains, so tours are conditional on weather. Your guide will confirm before you start. Being on time is imperative. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, the group may have to leave without you. The total time is four hours including the drive back to Escalante and the meeting point. Note that the operation runs on Mountain Standard Time, which is an hour ahead of Las Vegas and Arizona.

What’s included

  • Live guide in English.
  • bottled water.
  • instruction on rappelling and downclimbing techniques.
  • use of technical equipment for the three rappels.

Is this one for you?Small groups work best here since downclimbs and rappels rely on partner assists and teamwork. You're not moving solo through the canyon. Families and beginners with moderate fitness will find the challenges manageable with the guide's leadership, though anyone uncomfortable with heights or scrambling should look for an easier slot canyon option.
