Step-by-step itinerary
Backcountry Hummer Adventure on Catalina Island

- Cruise ridge around rugged canyons
- Reach 1,500-foot East Peak
- Travel along Divide Road
- Enjoy ocean and canyon views
- Spot wildlife like bison and deer
The experience
The Hummer H1 is open-air and seats 12 guests plus a co-pilot, so you're exposed to the wind and the terrain as the vehicle climbs the ridge around deep canyons. The route itself is the draw: you'll reach 1,500-foot East Peak, then follow Divide Road where the island opens up on both sides. Ocean on one flank, canyons on the other. The unimproved roads mean the ride is rough enough that the operator warns against it for anyone with spinal injuries, heart conditions, or a fear of heights. It's not a smooth scenic drive.
Wildlife appears on these backcountry stretches: bison, deer and other animals move through the terrain, though sightings are not guaranteed. The guide navigates the route and points out what's visible, but the experience is built around the landscape and the vehicle's ability to reach it, not a narrated tour of stops. Ten percent of the tour proceeds support the Catalina Island Conservancy's conservation work on the island.
Book early. This tour sells out regularly. Children from age 5 can join if accompanied by an adult, though the rough road and exposure make it a ride rather than a gentle outing. The whole experience runs 2 hours, and the driver handles all the navigation.

Is this one for you?The 2-hour commitment leaves room for other activities on your Catalina day, but the unimproved backcountry roads mean this is a rough ride. Book it if you want to reach the high ridge and the island's interior, not if you're looking for a smooth scenic loop.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 11 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. No refund if you cancel.
What is East Peak like when you reach it?
East Peak sits at 1,500 feet and offers views across the island's ridge and canyons. The Hummer climbs there via the backcountry roads, and from that vantage you can see both the ocean side and the canyon side of Catalina before the route follows Divide Road along the ridge.
Can you see bison on this tour?
Bison, deer and other animals live in Catalina's backcountry, and you might spot them as the Hummer travels the ridge roads. Sightings depend on where the animals are on the day you go, so they're not guaranteed.
Is this tour rough on the body?
Yes. The Hummer travels unimproved roads over rugged terrain, and the ride is bumpy enough that the operator does not recommend it for travelers with spinal injuries, heart conditions, or a fear of heights. Children must be at least 5 years old and accompanied by an adult.
How many people ride in the Hummer?
The Hummer H1 holds 12 guests plus one co-pilot, so groups stay under 13 total. A live guide in English drives and navigates the route.
