Durango Half Day Rafting: Lower Animas River Rapids
Two hours of rapids without eating up your whole day
A half-day rafting trip on the Lower Animas River in Durango puts you through Class II and Class III rapids in the heart of town, with a choice of morning or afternoon departure. You get around two hours on the water, a safety briefing and paddling instruction from your guide, and the option to paddle or relax. Children from age 4 are welcome.
The Experience
The Lower Animas flows through Durango's historic center, and the half-day format means you can fit it around the rest of your schedule. You'll navigate Class II rapids—the rolling, splashy kind that soak the front of the boat—and hit one Class III section at Smelter Whitewater Park where the current runs faster and wetter. Water levels shift with the season: spring brings higher flows and bigger pushes, while summer runs calmer between the rocks, but either way there's enough current to keep things moving. Your guide handles the main work of reading the river and steering downstream, though you're welcome to paddle alongside them if you want in on the action.
The trip includes helmets, life jackets and splash tops; a safety orientation covers what to expect before you push off. Guides average 2,000 river miles and mix the work with stories about the area and how the town sits on this stretch of water. Parking is free, and river and land access fees are built in. Wet-suit rentals are available and recommended through June if you're sensitive to cold water.

Can I choose between a morning and afternoon departure?
Yes—the Lower Animas half-day trip runs both morning and afternoon, so you pick the slot that fits your schedule when you book.
What are Class II and Class III rapids actually like?
Class II rapids roll over the bow and splash the front of the raft; Class III rapids run faster and usually soak everyone head to toe. The Lower Animas includes plenty of Class II sections and one Class III at Smelter Whitewater Park.
Do I have to paddle, or can I just sit in the boat?
You choose—your guide will paddle and steer the raft through the current, and you're welcome to paddle alongside them or sit back and watch the river go by.
Is this safe for kids?
The Lower Animas half-day trip takes children from age 4 and up. All trips include a safety orientation and paddling instruction before you launch, and you'll wear a helmet and life jacket the whole time.
How much time will I actually spend on the water?
You'll get around two hours on the river, hitting the best rapid sections and floating through downtown Durango before the takeout.
What happens if the water is too cold?
Wet-suit and wet-suit boot rentals are highly recommended through June when snowmelt keeps the river cold; you can arrange them when you book.
