The experience

Ignacio Garcia painted a 40-foot woman called La Mujer Empoderada over Congress Street to honor the women who raised him. Joe Pagac hid desert creatures inside a cycling mural. El Mac based a figure holding a saguaro blossom on his own wife. On this one-mile walk, your guide walks you past these pieces and introduces you to the artists by name, not as anonymous tags on a wall. You'll see Fin DAC's Vergiss, Rueben Moreno's Las Tres Hermanas, Danny Martin's Jackie Daytona, and the work that came out of the Rock the Spot graffiti festival tucked into Rialto Alley.

The guide knows which murals went up last season and which artist is working on the next project: the kind of detail that changes how you read the walls. Freaky Foot Tours is mother-and-son owned with five generations of Arizona roots, and the guides are described as eccentric and ethereal. The walk stays on flat downtown sidewalks at an easy pace, so you can stop to photograph without rushing. Bring water and sun protection. The tour runs about 75 minutes.
