The experience
Hotel pickup brings you to the trailhead, where your naturalist guide leads you up a mountain ridge that most visitors never reach. The hike climbs steeply into alpine tundra: the kind of terrain where the views open up in all directions and the only sounds are wind and your own breathing. Your guide stops along the way to point out the natural features and ecosystems around you: the tundra patchwork of greens, reds and blues, the rock formations, the way the landscape changes as you gain elevation. Later in the season, wild blueberries, lingonberries and currants line the trail.
The ridge scramble takes you over jagged rocks and through dips full of delicate wildflowers, climbing higher into the alpine where the views normally belong to the Dall sheep. You won't see the boardwalks or the buses here. The rugged mountains rise around you like castles, and the wide valleys stretch into the distance. When you've had enough, you descend back to the van and your guide drops you at your hotel lobby. The whole experience, from pickup to drop-off, runs approximately 4.5 to 5 hours.
Trekking poles and rain jackets are provided. You'll need a high level of physical fitness and the ability to hike uphill for 3 hours or more. The hike is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.

Is this one for you?The 5-hour round trip (including drive time, the climb and the descent) fits a morning or afternoon without eating the whole day, so you can pair it with other activities in Denali. The steep uphill scramble and the 3-hour climbing requirement rule out casual walkers, but if you're fit enough to handle it, you'll see the alpine tundra and the ridge views that the park buses never reach.
