The morning starts at the tour center with a video on manatee behavior and the rules for interacting with them—how to move, how close you can get, what the animals need from you. A guide fits you for a wetsuit, then your private group boards the boat with a USCG-certified captain who knows the refuge and where the manatees gather. You enter the water as a snorkeler, not a passenger watching from the boat, and the guide stays in the water with your group to direct you toward the animals and make sure the interaction works for both you and them.

The captain photographs the entire swim—both above and below the water—so you have images of the moment without having to manage a camera yourself. When you return to the tour center after three hours, a high-resolution picture CD is available to purchase if you want to keep the shots.
