We stepped onto the dock behind Paddletail Waterfront Lodge just as the last bit of heat clung to the air — you know that sticky Florida feeling? Our captain, Mike, greeted us with this easy laugh and a quick tip about where manatees like to hide out. The boat hummed quietly as we pulled away, and I caught this faint smell of salt and something green — maybe marsh grass? It’s hard to describe but it felt right for Crystal River.
Mike slowed down near a patch of water lilies, pointing out a ripple that turned out to be a manatee’s nose poking up. I swear I almost missed it; they’re so much quieter than I expected. He told us about the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge and how these gentle giants come here for the warm springs. At one point, a heron flapped overhead and startled me — everyone laughed, even Mike. It’s funny how quickly you start whispering on the water, like you’re in someone else’s living room.
