The experience
The cave itself is the centerpiece: a naturally preserved geological formation you enter through the old Springfield jail gates, about 200 feet from the gift shop. The guide leads you through an hour underground, pointing out stalagmites, stalactites, flowstone and the rare helictites formations that most caves don't have. Pathways are well-lit and accessible, so the walk is steady rather than strenuous.
After the cave, you move to gemstone panning in what the operator calls the Motherlode. You get 10 ounces of gemstone mix, fossil pieces, shark teeth and arrowheads in your pay dirt, plus an identification card and keeper bag so you can sort and take home everything you find. This is the hands-on part: you're working through the material yourself, not watching a demonstration. The panning takes about half an hour.
The rest of the three hours fills with a 9-hole indoor mini golf course (clubs, balls and scorecards provided, with spinner obstacles on some holes) and a leisurely walk on the nature trail where you'll see Triceratops, Smilodon, Tyrannosaurus and over 25 other dinosaur displays. Tours depart on the hour, with the last one starting an hour before the site closes.
