The Experience

What happens if you take a family with kids and grandparents onto a river that actually has something to see? The Upper Colorado River near Vail answers that question. You meet at the Rancho Del Rio boathouse in Bond at either 9am or 1pm, gear up with a state-certified guide, and ride a shuttle to the put-in. The river section here runs Class I-II rapids most of the year, with occasional Class III when spring snowmelt peaks in mid-June through early July. The water comes straight from Rocky Mountain National Park, so it's cold and clear.

The scenery is what makes this Colorado River rafting trip different from a lot of other half-day runs. You're floating through meadows and valleys with steep canyon walls on both sides, and the wildlife shows up — bald eagles, deer, beavers, big horn sheep. The guides know where to look and when to point things out. Water levels shift with the season. May and late July through September tend to run slower and give you more time in the valley; mid-June to early July is the fast ride if that's what you want. Either way, you get a shuttle back to the boathouse by afternoon or early evening, depending on which departure you choose.

The operation runs small groups, which means you're not packed into a commercial raft with thirty people. Your guide is trained and certified, and they've done this section enough times to know where the swimming holes are and how to read the water. Kids as young as five can go, and the trip is built for mixed fitness levels — you don't need to be an athlete. Bring a change of clothes and a towel; everything else, including the wetsuit if you want one, is part of the package.
