Load a flintlock musket the way militia did in 1775, then fire at targets 25 yards away.

A 2-hour hands-on class in New Hampshire where you learn the history and mechanics of 18th-century flintlock muskets, then load and fire one at a rustic shooting range. Your instructor has 35+ years of experience with historic weapons. Groups stay small, four shooters maximum, and all muskets, ammunition, and safety gear are provided.

The experience

The class opens with a hands-on overview of colonial-era firearm technology: what these muskets could do, what they couldn't, and why they were designed the way they were. Your instructor walks you through the mechanics before anyone touches a weapon. After a safety orientation, you'll head out to the primitive range with your issued flintlock musket and cartridge box, ready to learn the drill of loading and firing the way 18th-century militia did.

Once everyone understands the commands and feels comfortable with the instructions, you start loading with live ammunition and shooting at life-sized targets positioned 25 yards away: a distance well within reach for someone handling a musket for the first time. Between shots, the instructor talks through historic details: who used these weapons, how they were deployed, what their real limitations were. The last two rounds turn competitive: you race against the clock to load and fire as fast as you can, trying to break the range record. Beginners have won before.

This is rural New Hampshire, so dress for being outside. The experience runs 2 hours. Non-shooting spectators are welcome to watch, though only four people can actually fire in a single session.

Is this one for you?The experience involves standing, walking to the range, and handling a loaded firearm with recoil, so you'll need at least a moderate level of physical fitness and the ability to follow safety commands precisely. The instructor is there to teach, not to accommodate mobility limitations or spinal concerns, so this class works best for travelers who can move freely outdoors and hold a musket steady.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What do I actually do during the 2 hours?

You spend the first part learning the mechanics and safety of the flintlock musket indoors, then walk to the range and load and fire live rounds at targets 25 yards away. The last two shots are timed challenges where you try to load and fire as quickly as possible.

Is the ammunition and all the gear really included?

Yes. The operator provides all muskets, shooting supplies, live ammunition, and safety gear. You bring nothing except yourself and appropriate outdoor clothing.

How many people will be in my group?

Class size is limited to four people who will shoot. Non-shooting spectators can attend, but only four participants actually fire in each session.

What makes a colonial flintlock musket different from modern firearms?

A flintlock musket is a muzzle-loading weapon that uses a spark from flint striking steel to ignite the powder charge. They're slower to load, less accurate, and require a very different technique than modern guns. The instructor explains both the engineering and the historical context of why they were designed this way.

Do I need any experience with firearms to do this?

No. The instructor teaches beginners regularly and the 25-yard distance is designed for novice shooters. You'll learn everything you need during the safety orientation and the hands-on instruction before you fire.
