The Experience

I’ll admit, I booked the Chicago Fire TV Show Set Tour mostly out of curiosity—I’ve watched the show for years, but never thought about what those places actually felt like in real life. Turns out, standing outside the real Firehouse 51 feels different than you’d expect. The brick is rougher, and there’s this faint smell of diesel and coffee drifting from somewhere inside. Our driver (he’d seen every season twice) handed us a little info sheet since guides can’t go inside with you—something about it being an active firehouse. We hung back as a couple of firefighters walked past; one of them grinned when he saw my friend trying to get the perfect selfie angle.

Lottie’s Pub was next—Molly’s Bar on the show. It looks smaller up close, honestly, but that made it feel more like a neighborhood spot than some TV set. The bartender had this dry sense of humor and told us how fans always try to order “whatever Herrmann drinks.” I tried to say thanks in my worst Chicago accent; she just laughed and slid over a coaster with the pub logo. There’s something oddly comforting about sitting where your favorite characters supposedly hang out—even if it’s all fiction.

We cruised by the Chicago Fire Academy (just photos outside—you can’t go in), then headed for Millennium Park. The Bean is shinier than I expected, reflecting every bit of city noise and sunlight back at you. There were kids running around, tourists everywhere, but I found myself staring at my own warped reflection for longer than I’d planned. Our last stop was the Chicago Cultural Center—the Tiffany dome is unreal up close, all cool glass and echoey footsteps inside. No guide here either, but they gave us directions that actually made sense (for once). I still think about that dome sometimes when I see sunlight through colored glass.
