Ghost hunt at UTC and cemeteries
- Explore haunted UTC campus spots
- Investigate Citizens Cemetery haunted areas
The Experience
We were already halfway across the UTC campus when our guide, Marcus, handed me this odd little meter with blinking lights. I’d seen stuff like it on TV but never thought I’d actually be waving one around in the dark, listening for ghosts in Chattanooga. The air felt thick and a bit damp—someone behind me joked it was “perfect haunting weather.” The group was small, mostly locals (at least that’s what their accents told me), and everyone seemed half-nervous, half-excited. I kept catching the scent of grass and something older—maybe moss or just that cemetery earth smell you only notice at night.
Marcus didn’t do the usual spooky stories routine; instead, he showed us how to use all this ghost hunting equipment—Mel meters, laser grids, even something called an Ovilus X that spits out words. I’m not sure if I wanted it to say my name or not. We moved between gravestones in Citizens Cemetery, careful over uneven ground (I nearly tripped twice—boots weren’t my best choice). At one point, someone’s device beeped and everyone froze. For a second it was so quiet you could hear the wind through those old trees and my heart thumping way too loud.
I tried taking a few photos where Marcus said people had caught faces before—nothing weird showed up for me but honestly? Just standing there in the dark with strangers, waiting for something to answer back from the shadows… that was enough. There was this moment where the Ovilus spat out “cold” right as I felt a chill on my neck. Coincidence? Maybe. Still thinking about it days later.
