The experience
The tour starts at Camp North End, a shopping and food complex built on the site of a former manufacturing plant and military depot, then heads west into Biddleville along Beatties Ford Road. Biddleville, Charlotte's oldest surviving historic Black neighborhood, was established in 1871 around the Biddle Memorial Institute, now Johnson C. Smith University. You'll cruise past historic homes and stop at Five Points Plaza to see one of Charlotte's newest monuments honoring the neighborhood's role in the National Desegregation Movement and notable JCSU alumni.
From there the route moves into McCrorey Heights, where the guide discusses the neighborhood's significance to Charlotte's place in the civil rights movement and the historic church that anchors the community. As you approach Uptown, you'll pass the Bank of America building and enter 2nd Ward to visit the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts & Culture, learning the story of its founding. The tour also stops at one of Charlotte's few remaining Brooklyn neighborhood buildings, a reminder of the community that was leveled by urban renewal, and passes Bank of America Stadium, where the guide shares hidden moments from Charlotte's history. At Romare Bearden Park, you'll hear about Charlotte's most famous visual artist and his contributions to the Harlem Renaissance, and at Truist Field the guide covers Charlotte's Negro League Baseball legacy before returning to Camp North End to celebrate the city's ongoing Black entrepreneurship.
The open-air golf cart keeps the pace relaxed while covering much more ground than tours confined to Uptown. Bottled water is provided, and the guide speaks English throughout. Children from age 5 are welcome, and the tour suits all fitness levels.
