Dolphins on nearly every tour, plus a chance to hunt shells on an island barrier.

A 90-minute boat tour from Charleston through salt marshes and coastal rivers to Morris Island, an uninhabited barrier island where you search for shells and shark teeth near the Morris Island Lighthouse. Your captain (either a former Spanish teacher turned guide or an environmental scientist) narrates the local wildlife, especially the Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins you'll see on 99.9% of departures. Coolers with ice and water are provided. The tour runs with a public group or as a private charter for up to 14 guests.

Step-by-step itinerary

Dolphin cruise and island exploration

  • Depart from the dock
  • Cruise through salt marshes
  • Observe dolphins and estuary birds
  • Arrive at Morris Island
  • View Morris Island Lighthouse
  • Stroll beach to find shells and shark teeth
  • Take photos and enjoy scenery
  • Return via Lighthouse House Inlet and Folly River

The experience

The boat leaves the dock for a 30-minute cruise through one of Charleston's most scenic rivers, where the salt marshes open up to show Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins, herons, egrets and other estuary birds. The captains know the Lowcountry well. One has lived here since 1995 and taught Spanish for 18 years before guiding full-time. The other is a Charleston native with a master's degree in Environmental and Sustainability Studies and over a decade of tour experience. Both are known for keeping the mood upbeat and easy with kids and grandparents.

Once you reach Morris Island, an uninhabited barrier island, you get a view of the Morris Island Lighthouse and time to explore the beach. Tide allowing, you'll walk the sand to hunt for shells and shark teeth, take photos and soak in the setting. The return route runs through Lighthouse House Inlet and the Folly River, so you see a different stretch of water on the way back.

Coolers with ice and water come aboard. You're welcome to bring your own drinks. Infants sit on an adult's lap, and the tour suits all fitness levels. Service animals are allowed. There are no restrooms onboard, so plan accordingly.

Is this one for you?Book the public tour if you're traveling solo or as a couple and don't mind meeting other guests. Choose the private charter if your group wants the boat to itself and can fill at least a few seats. Either way, the captains' local knowledge and the near-certain dolphin sightings make the 90 minutes feel unhurried.

What is Morris Island and what can I do there?
