The Experience

We stepped off 72nd Street and right away, Central Park felt different through the camera. Our guide, Sam—he’s lived here forever, you could tell—started us near Bethesda Terrace. He talked about light bouncing off the stone and how you can catch reflections in puddles after a morning rain. I never noticed how many shades of green there are until he pointed out the way the grass changes near the Mall. There was this saxophone player under the arches, his music echoing just enough to make me pause before snapping a shot. I think I missed focus but honestly, it kind of worked.

We wandered up toward Shakespeare Garden (I guess that’s only on spring and summer tours), and Sam showed us how to frame flowers so they don’t look too postcard-y. He had this trick for using your hand as a lens hood—simple but weirdly satisfying when it works. At one point he asked if I wanted to try shooting manual, which made me nervous, but he just grinned and said, “It’s only pixels.” A little breeze kicked up and I caught the smell of hot dogs from a cart somewhere nearby—classic New York moment.

I liked that we weren’t rushed; Sam let us linger by Bow Bridge while some wedding photos were happening in the background (those couples always look so happy, don’t they?). He told stories about photographers who’d spent years documenting this park—made me see it less like a tourist spot and more like an actual living place. By the end, my shoes were dusty and my memory card was full of shots that probably won’t win awards but mean something to me now. Still thinking about that saxophone echo.
