The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the quiet hum of the electric scooter as we rolled past joggers and dog walkers near Sheep Meadow. You get this nice breeze on your face, even on a warm afternoon, and it’s honestly a relief not having to dodge crowds on foot. The scooters are spotless—mine looked like it just came out of the box—and they hand you a helmet and a fold-out map before you set off. Our guide, Sam, made sure everyone knew how to use the throttle and brakes (it’s pretty intuitive), and pointed out that the bell comes in handy around those tight corners by Bethesda Terrace.
I’d never realized how much ground you could cover in Central Park until now. We zipped from the Loeb Boathouse up to the Reservoir in what felt like minutes. There’s this faint smell of roasted nuts from one of the carts near 72nd Street—couldn’t resist stopping for a quick snack break. If you’re new to scooters, they’ll walk you through everything before you go; I appreciated that extra bit of attention since I was nervous about riding at first. The scooters have headlights and taillights too, so if you’re still out when dusk hits (which happened to us), you’re visible and safe.
