The experience

Your guide picks you up at your location and drives you to Cathedral Rock, the most popular vortex site in Sedona and accessible during daytime only by public shuttle or permitted companies. The hike starts at the Cathedral Rock Trailhead, where bathrooms are available before and after. The first stretch climbs Cathedral Rock Trail with large rocky steps and roughly 100 feet of elevation gain over 0.2 miles to reach a plateau at the base of the formation.

From there, you walk 1–2 miles on the mostly flat Templeton Trail along Cathedral Rock's base, where the guide stops frequently to point out the geology, identify plants and animals, and explain Sedona's human history. The route passes spectacular views of Cathedral Rock and other red rock formations throughout. If you want to add distance, an optional descent reaches Oak Creek, one of the few public access points to this spring-fed creek, though it requires hiking downhill and back up again with another 100 feet of elevation gain.

The tour adjusts to your fitness level and preferences. Trekking poles, bottled water and snacks come with the booking, so you carry only what you need for the day.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is Cathedral Rock and why is it only accessible by shuttle or guide during the day?

Cathedral Rock is Sedona's most popular vortex site and an iconic red rock formation. Daytime access is restricted to public shuttle service and permitted tour companies to manage the volume of visitors and protect the site.

How much elevation gain is there on this hike?

The Cathedral Rock Trail section has approximately 100 feet of elevation gain over 0.2 miles with large rocky steps. The optional Oak Creek descent adds another 100 feet of elevation gain on the return.

Can I skip the Cathedral Rock climb and just walk the Templeton Trail?

The itinerary includes the Cathedral Rock Trail climb to the plateau, then the Templeton Trail walk along the base. The guide adjusts the tour to your abilities and preferences, so discuss any concerns about the initial climb when you're picked up.

What does the guide teach about Sedona beyond pointing out the rocks?

Your guide is a Sedona local and expert in philosophy who explains the geology of the red rocks, identifies the flora and fauna you encounter, and shares the human history of the area throughout the hike.

Is Oak Creek worth the extra hiking effort?

Oak Creek is spring-fed and one of the few publicly accessible points to reach its waters in Sedona. The optional descent requires hiking downhill and back uphill with 100 feet of elevation gain, so add it only if you have the energy and want to see the creek itself.
