The First Murphy House, built in 1902 by a 17-year-old Michael J. Murphy using hand tools and local materials, marks where Carmel's signature architectural voice began. Then comes the Tuck Box, a 1926 structure Hugh Comstock designed as an office and showcase for his wife's handcrafted dolls—it evolved into a beloved tea room and restaurant, and its irregular chimneys and candy-striped awnings still hold nearly a century of whimsy.
