Rappel, scramble and wade through sandstone canyons shaped by thousands of years of erosion.

A six-hour canyoneering adventure in Capitol Reef National Park where you hike, scramble, rappel and wade through redrock canyons with an experienced guide and full equipment provided. No prior experience is required, though moderate physical fitness is essential. The guide teaches rappelling technique and leads you through natural obstacle courses carved into brilliantly colored sandstone.

The experience

Six hours of canyoneering means you're moving through Capitol Reef's redrock landscape most of the day, tackling challenges that wind and water have carved over thousands of years. The canyon floor itself becomes your route: you'll hike and scramble over rock, rappel down cliff faces with instruction from your guide, down-climb sections where you face the wall, and wade through water channels. Each canyon presents different obstacles, so no two runs feel the same. The guide handles safety and technique. You handle the physical work of moving through the terrain.

Rappelling instruction is built into the experience, so you learn the mechanics before you need them. Your guide is an accomplished canyoneer who reads the canyon and adjusts the route to match the group's pace and comfort. All canyoneering equipment (harnesses, ropes, helmets) comes with you. You just bring yourself and the willingness to get wet and dirty. The landscape does the heavy lifting: towering sandstone walls, narrow slot canyons, and the constant puzzle of how to move downward through a space that was never built for people.

Check in 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time. You'll need moderate physical fitness to handle six hours of climbing, scrambling and rappelling. The park recommends this adventure only for travelers with solid cardiovascular health. Children as young as seven can join, provided they meet the physical fitness requirement and weigh between 70 and 250 pounds. A waiver is required at check-in.

Is this one for you?Six hours is a full-morning or full-afternoon commitment, which leaves the rest of your day free for other Capitol Reef activities like scenic drives or shorter hikes, but rules out combining this with another major adventure on the same day. Choose this if you want to spend most of your time actually moving through the canyons rather than driving between viewpoints.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (7 to 17 years). Children under 7 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What does rappelling instruction cover before I go over the edge?

Your guide teaches you the rappelling technique and safety systems on the ground before you're on a rope. You learn how to manage the descent, how to control your speed, and how the equipment works. The guide stays with you through every rappel to ensure you're secure.

Will I get soaked, or is wading just ankle-deep?

Wading is part of the canyoneering route, and water depth varies depending on the canyon and recent rainfall. Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet, and bring a change if you prefer to dry off afterward. Water channels are part of the natural terrain you're moving through.

What makes Capitol Reef's canyons different from other slot canyons in Utah?

Capitol Reef's redrock canyons are carved through brilliantly colored sandstone cliffs that have been shaped by wind and water over thousands of years. The park's canyons offer a mix of technical challenges (rappelling, down-climbing, scrambling) rather than a single slot canyon walk, so you're solving multiple types of obstacles in one day.

Can I do this if I've never climbed or rappelled before?

No prior canyoneering experience is needed. Your guide provides instruction and support throughout. You do need moderate physical fitness to handle six hours of hiking, scrambling, rappelling and climbing. The activity is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
