The experience

The boat leaves the dock and enters the coastal salt marsh where the birds live year-round but stay hidden from anyone on shore. Being out in the wetlands every single day for six months gives the guide a working knowledge of where nesting ospreys, herons, egrets and the secretive species of the wetlands are most likely to be found on any given tide and time of year. You get close-up views of birds that people almost never have the chance to see, with binoculars in hand to catch the detail of plumage and behavior.

The route is not fixed. Conditions change the water level, the light, where birds are feeding, and the guide adjusts the course each morning based on what is happening that day. Some mornings you might see dolphins moving through the shallows alongside the birds. The salt marsh itself is the draw: the tangle of cordgrass and narrow channels where wading birds hunt and raptors nest, all of it visible from the water in a way a walking tour of the shore cannot offer.

Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings run longer (either two and a half or three hours depending on the season), and are sponsored by the Cape May Bird Observatory, which means a higher price but also more time to move through the marsh and wait for birds to show. Other departures are typically two hours. All areas of the boat and dock are wheelchair accessible, and infants can ride on an adult's lap or in a stroller.
