The Experience

How do you explore a park this size without a guide or a tour bus schedule? You download the Shaka Guide app before you arrive, and the tour loads onto your phone. Once you're in the Island in the Sky district, the app uses your phone's GPS to track where you are on the park roads and plays narration about what you're passing — the Monitor and Merrimac buttes, the Navajo Rocks trail, Dead Horse Point across the mesa. You decide which stops matter to you. Mesa Arch gets crowded at sunrise, so the app tells you that upfront and suggests coming back in the afternoon. The White Rim Overlook has a short walk or a 1.8-mile hike depending on what you want that day. You're not locked into a schedule or a group pace.

The narration covers the geology that carved these canyons — the Colorado and Green rivers working over millions of years — and the human history, from ancestral Puebloan granaries built around 1200 AD to the Civil War ironclad ships the buttes were named after. The app also flags the hiking trails it recommends: Upheaval Dome, a one-mile overlook walk or an eight-mile ridge loop depending on your stamina; Aztec Butte, a 1.7-mile round trip to stone granaries with views; Whale Rock, an easy-to-moderate one-mile climb. The app includes a full offline map and GPS, so you don't need cell service to navigate or find your way, though you'll want to download everything on strong Wi-Fi before you leave Moab. The tour covers Island in the Sky only — the Needles and Maze districts are 2–3 hours away and need high-clearance vehicles.

Bring water and plan ahead: the only potable water in the district is at the Island in the Sky Visitor Center, open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (extended hours in spring and fall). The park itself is open 24 hours. All the main roads are passable in a standard 2WD car, though some backcountry routes like Shafer Trail require 4WD. Cell service is spotty throughout the park, but the Visitor Center has public Wi-Fi if you need to troubleshoot the app. You'll need to pay the park entrance fee at the gate or the Visitor Center before you start the tour.

Top questions

What's the difference between this self-guided tour and a regular guided tour of Canyonlands?

This self-guided tour runs on your phone using the Shaka Guide app, so you control when you stop, how long you stay at each overlook, and which hiking trails you attempt. A guided tour would have fixed departure times and a set itinerary. The app delivers the same narration and trail recommendations, but you're not following a group or a schedule.

Do I need cell service or Wi-Fi while I'm driving through the park?

No. The tour works completely offline once you download it in advance on strong Wi-Fi. Your phone's GPS and the offline map guide you turn-by-turn through the park roads, and the audio plays without any data connection. Cell service in Island in the Sky is spotty anyway, so offline is actually the reliable way to go.

What hiking trails does the tour recommend?

The tour highlights six trails: Mesa Arch (easy, half-mile round trip); White Rim Overlook (flat 1.8-mile round trip or a short walk from the lot); Upheaval Dome (one-mile overlook or an eight-mile ridge loop); Aztec Butte (1.7-mile round trip to ancestral Puebloan granaries); Whale Rock (easy-to-moderate, one-mile round trip); and Moses and Zeus towers (challenging, 12-mile round trip). The app describes each one so you can pick based on your time and fitness.

Can I use this tour if I don't have a smartphone?

No. The tour runs on the Shaka Guide app, which requires a smartphone compatible with the app. You'll also need to download the tour before you arrive, which requires strong Wi-Fi or cellular data — the park's cell service is unreliable.

What's included in the park entrance fee?

The tour itself is the audio guide and directions. The Canyonlands National Park entrance fee is separate and required; you pay it at the gate, the Visitor Center, or the bookstore using cash, check, or credit card. The tour does not include the park pass, a rental car, or meals.

How long does the full tour take?

The tour is designed to take 6 to 8 hours depending on which stops you choose and how long you spend at each one. Since you control the pace, you can stretch it longer if you hike multiple trails or compress it by skipping overlooks. The tour never expires, so you can also split it across two days.
