The experience
Tanque Verde Canyon sits just outside Tucson in terrain otherwise closed to the public. The day starts with a short hike through the desert before you reach the first rappel. From there, the canyon narrows and the water features begin: you'll descend a series of cascading waterfalls using ropes and harnesses, dropping into pools below. The guide sets up each rappel and walks you through the technique, so beginners learn as they go. Between descents there's more hiking, mixing the physical challenge of the trail with the technical work on the ropes.
An AMGA-certified guide leads the whole trip and handles all the rigging. You wear a harness, helmet and rappel device throughout. The guide provides all three. The pace is steady but not rushed. There's time to take in the canyon walls and the water, and to catch your breath between rappels. Getting wet happens if you choose it, though the guide can usually route you around the pools unless the canyon is running high after a storm.
