The experience

You arrive at Canyon de Chelly and a Navajo guide meets you to begin a route through sites scattered across the canyon floor and walls. Along the way you'll stand in front of Kokopelli Cave with its pictographs, Newspaper Rock and Petroglyph Rock with their panel arrays, and two prehistoric Puebloan ruins called First Ruin and Junction Ruin. The guide explains what each image meant to the people who made it, when they lived there, and the stories passed down about the canyon itself. This is not a quick walk-through: at each site you hear the archaeology and the history together.

White House Ruin (the iconic structure the canyon is known for) is on the route, along with Ledge Ruin in Canyon del Muerto, which sits among both ruins and rock art. How many stops you reach depends on how long you spend at each one. If you linger with the vendors selling arts and crafts in the canyon or want to sit longer at a particular site, the guide adjusts the route to keep the day on schedule.
