Trace ancient trails through hoodoos and savor a picnic overlooking Thor’s Hammer

A private guided hike in Bryce Canyon National Park descends into the amphitheater along the Peekaboo Loop and Wall Street, passing Thor's Hammer and the Queen Victoria Hoodoo before a gourmet charcuterie picnic. The hike starts at Sunrise Point and runs four to six hours depending on your fitness and whether you choose the full loop or a shorter variation. Trekking poles and bottled water are included; an altered route can be arranged if you need it.

4h–6h

Step-by-step itinerary

Guided hike and picnic at Bryce Canyon

  • Start at Sunrise Point viewpoint
  • Descend into canyon among hoodoos and pines
  • View Wall Street and Thor's Hammer
  • See Thor's Hammer rock formation
  • Hike to Queen Victoria Hoodoo viewpoint
  • Enjoy gourmet charcuterie board picnic
  • Optional longer hike on Peek-A-Boo Loop

The Experience

The hike begins at Sunrise Point and descends into the canyon among the hoodoos, bristlecone pines, and stone arches. You'll traverse the Wall Street section—the most iconic stretch of the park—where the trail winds through narrow passages carved into the rock. A private guide leads the way, explaining how the amphitheaters formed, which plants and animals live here, and the human history of the area. The route is flexible: most hikers follow the main path to Thor's Hammer and the Queen Victoria Hoodoo, but if you want a longer day, the full Peekaboo Loop is an option.

Midway through, you'll reach a birds-eye view of Wall Street and Thor's Hammer—the stopping point for a gourmet charcuterie board picnic. The spread includes cured meats, cheeses, seasonal fruits, vegetables, nuts, spreads and crackers, plus bottled water. Trail snacks are available on request. You eat with the canyon in front of you, not at a trailhead parking lot.

Trekking poles are provided, which makes the descent easier on the knees and helps with footing on the uneven stone. The hike requires at least moderate fitness; the operator can adjust the route if you have physical restrictions. A private guide means the pace stays with your group, not a fixed schedule for twelve strangers.

Top questions

What is Thor's Hammer and where do I see it on this hike?

Thor's Hammer is the most iconic hoodoo in Bryce Canyon—a distinctive rock formation that rises from the canyon floor. You'll see it from a birds-eye viewpoint partway through the hike, and that's where the picnic happens, so you have time to take in the view while you eat.

How difficult is the Peekaboo Loop compared to the main hike?

The main route covers Wall Street and the key hoodoos like Thor's Hammer and Queen Victoria, suitable for hikers with moderate fitness. The full Peekaboo Loop is longer and more strenuous; your guide can offer it as an option if you want a more challenging day.

What's included in the charcuterie picnic?

The picnic includes cured meats, cheeses, seasonal fruits, vegetables, nuts, spreads, and crackers, plus bottled water. Trail snacks are available on request if you want extra fuel during the hike.

Do I need my own trekking poles, or are they provided?

Trekking poles are included with the hike. They reduce strain on your knees during the descent and help with balance on the rocky terrain.

Can the hike be shortened if I'm not sure about my fitness level?

Yes. The operator can offer an altered itinerary to accommodate physical restrictions, so let your guide know your concerns when you start. The main route to Thor's Hammer and Queen Victoria takes four to six hours depending on pace; shorter variations are possible.

Is this hike private, or will I be hiking with other groups?

You can book this as a private guided hike for your group, or choose the large group option of five to eight hikers. Either way, a live guide in English leads the entire experience.
