Paint an abstract canvas in 90 minutes with palette knife techniques you'll use again

A 1.5-hour abstract painting class in the Bronx for beginners and intermediate artists, taught by a professional artist with an MFA. You work with palette knives on a 16" x 20" canvas, receive one-on-one feedback in a group of up to six, and leave with your finished painting plus a complimentary poster worth $40.

The experience

The class runs ninety minutes and splits into four parts: a ten-minute introduction to abstract art and your materials, a ten-minute step-by-step demo on how to start, sixty minutes of hands-on painting with individual feedback from the instructor, and a ten-minute wrap-up. The first ten minutes of painting time is setup and practice with the palette knives so you get comfortable with the tool before you commit to the canvas. The remaining fifty minutes is your own work. The instructor circulates and gives you guidance as you build the piece.

Everything is provided: a 16" x 20" canvas, nontoxic acrylic paints (chosen for quick drying), multiple palette knives, and bottled water. The technique itself is the point: palette knives let you work faster and looser than brushes, which is what makes abstract painting feel different from what most people have tried before. You don't need any prior experience. The class welcomes beginners and intermediate painters equally.

When you finish, you take the canvas home wet but dry enough to move, along with a free 24" x 36" poster of the artist's work. The space is wheelchair accessible, and children from age eleven can join. Public transportation options are nearby if you're coming from elsewhere in the city.

Is this one for you?The instructor teaches in English, so you'll follow the demo and feedback comfortably if that's your language. The small group size and ninety-minute length work well if you want to learn a real technique without committing to a longer course, or if you're introducing someone from age eleven to painting for the first time.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years); Child (11 to 12 years). Children under 11 can't be included in the booking.

How much experience do I need to take this abstract painting class?

None. The class is designed for beginners and intermediate painters alike. The instructor teaches the palette knife technique from the ground up, starting with a demonstration and then guiding you through your own work.

What's included in the class, and do I take anything home?

The class includes a 16" x 20" canvas, acrylic paints, palette knives, and water. You take home your finished painting and a free 24" x 36" poster of the artist's work, valued at $40.

How many people will be in the class with me?

The class is capped at six students, which means you get personalized attention and individual feedback from the instructor throughout the session.

What is the palette knife technique, and why use it instead of brushes?

A palette knife is a flat, flexible tool you use to apply paint directly to the canvas, creating bold, dynamic strokes and texture. It lets you work faster and looser than brushes, which is why it's powerful for abstract painting. You can build layers and energy without the precision brushwork requires.
