The Experience
I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to walk out of a Branson theater still thinking about a flock of white doves. But that’s what happened at the Hamners’ Unbelievable Variety Show. The place smells faintly like popcorn (and maybe hairspray?), and you can feel the buzz in the lobby — families, couples, a few folks in sparkly jackets who seem to know every performer by name. Our tickets were waiting at the box office, which was nice since I always lose email confirmations.
The show itself? It’s kind of a whirlwind. Dave and Denise Hamner kicked things off with this illusion where Denise was suddenly floating way above these spikes — I gasped louder than I meant to, honestly. There’s something about live magic that gets under your skin, especially when real birds appear out of nowhere and swoop over your head. Jeff Brandt did these singing impressions that had people cracking up (my neighbor in the seat next to me mouthed “Elvis” before he even finished his first line). Tamra Tinoco belted out a ballad that gave me goosebumps — or maybe it was just the air conditioning kicking on again.
Between acts, you get these quick moments to look around — kids whispering guesses about how tricks work, an older couple holding hands when the aerialist spun above us. Anthony Soumiatin rolled onto stage with this giant Cyr wheel (I had to Google what that was later), spinning so fast my eyes went blurry. There’s a patriotic finale with big lights and everyone clapping along — not subtle but weirdly moving if you let yourself feel it. And yeah, I still think about those birds sometimes, which is funny because I’m not really a bird person.
